Fighting Discouragement

Posted by juills On February - 7 - 2010

Have you found yourself waking up to gray skies and feel like they are following you wherever you go? Does it feel like you’ve been forgotten by everyone; including God Himself? Sounds like you might be experiencing a bit of discouragement.

MIAMI - JANUARY 09: David Gorge who has been ...

With all that is going on in the world around us, like 10% unemployment, the economic situation, and the realities of the earthquake in Haiti,  it’s easy to be discouraged.  I have found myself there at times.  The key though is not to leave ourselves there in the grips of discouragement.    Take a look at Psalms 13 below and see how David who found himself in the grips of disappointment was able to release it’s grip.

Psalms 13
1 O Lord, how long will you forget me? Forever?
How long will you look the other way?
2 How long must I struggle with anguish in my soul,
with sorrow in my heart every day?
How long will my enemy have the upper hand?
3 Turn and answer me, O Lord my God!
Restore the sparkle to my eyes, or I will die.
4 Don’t let my enemies gloat, saying, “We have defeated him!”
Don’t let them rejoice at my downfall.
5 But I trust in your unfailing love.
I will rejoice because you have rescued me.
6 I will sing to the Lord
because he is good to me.

As we begin reading this psalm of David, we see a man very much discouraged; discouraged to the point that he perceives that God has forgotten him. David continues in his discouragement citing that even his enemy has the upper hand.  It’s in verse five that we see the grip of discouragement finally broken by realizing the truth… the truth that God hasn’t forgotten him as David remembers God’s unfailing love towards David.  This is also true for us.  The lie of you’re all alone, that even God has forgotten is a lie straight from the pit of hell.   The truth is that God is still there and that his love is unfailing towards you as well! Remember these passages to break the grip of discouragement in your life:

Deuteronomy 31:6,8
6 So be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid and do not panic before them. For the Lord your God will personally go ahead of you. He will neither fail you nor abandon you.

Psalms 18:2
The Lord is my rock, my fortress, and my savior;
my God is my rock, in whom I find protection.
He is my shield, the power that saves me,
and my place of safety.

Psalms 118:6
6 The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?

Jeremiah 29:11
11 For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

John 14:27
27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.

Hebrews 13:5
“I will never fail you.
I will never abandon you.”

Hebrews 13:6
“The Lord is my helper,
so I will have no fear.
What can mere people do to me?”
