Unclean/Demon Spirits

Matthew 8:28-32  And when he came to the other side, to the country of the Gadarenes, two demon-possessed men met him, coming out of the tombs, so fierce that no one could pass that way.  (29)  And behold, they cried out, “What have you to do with us, O Son of God? Have you come here to torment us before the time?”  (30)  Now a herd of many pigs was feeding at some distance from them.  (31)  And the demons begged him, saying, “If you cast us out, send us away into the herd of pigs.”  (32)  And he said to them, “Go.” So they came out and went into the pigs, and behold, the whole herd rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the waters.

Matthew 9:32-34  As they were going away, behold, a demon-oppressed man who was mute was brought to him.  (33)  And when the demon had been cast out, the mute man spoke. And the crowds marveled, saying, “Never was anything like this seen in Israel.”  (34)  But the Pharisees said, “He casts out demons by the prince of demons.”

Matthew 12:22-32  Then a demon-oppressed man who was blind and mute was brought to him, and he healed him, so that the man spoke and saw.  (23)  And all the people were amazed, and said, “Can this be the Son of David?”  (24)  But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, “It is only by Beelzebul, the prince of demons, that this man casts out demons.”  (25)  Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand.  (26)  And if Satan casts out Satan, he is divided against himself. How then will his kingdom stand?  (27)  And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.  (28)  But if it is by the Spirit of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.  (29)  Or how can someone enter a strong man's house and plunder his goods, unless he first binds the strong man? Then indeed he may plunder his house.  (30)  Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.  (31)  Therefore I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven people, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.  (32)  And whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

Matthew 12:43-45  “When the unclean spirit has gone out of a person, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, but finds none.  (44)  Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ And when it comes, it finds the house empty, swept, and put in order.  (45)  Then it goes and brings with it seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they enter and dwell there, and the last state of that person is worse than the first. So also will it be with this evil generation.”

Matthew 15:21-28  And Jesus went away from there and withdrew to the district of Tyre and Sidon.  (22)  And behold, a Canaanite woman from that region came out and was crying, “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is severely oppressed by a demon.”  (23)  But he did not answer her a word. And his disciples came and begged him, saying, “Send her away, for she is crying out after us.”  (24)  He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.”  (25)  But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.”  (26)  And he answered, “It is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.”  (27)  She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table.”  (28)  Then Jesus answered her, “O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.” And her daughter was healed instantly.

Matthew 17:14-18  And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him,  (15)  said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water.  (16)  And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.”  (17)  And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.”  (18)  And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly.

Mark 1:23-27  And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit. And he cried out,  (24)  “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”  (25)  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!”  (26)  And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice, came out of him.  (27)  And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

Mark 3:11  And whenever the unclean spirits saw him, they fell down before him and cried out, “You are the Son of God.”

Mark 5:1-13  They came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gerasenes.  (2)  And when Jesus had stepped out of the boat, immediately there met him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit.  (3)  He lived among the tombs. And no one could bind him anymore, not even with a chain,  (4)  for he had often been bound with shackles and chains, but he wrenched the chains apart, and he broke the shackles in pieces. No one had the strength to subdue him.  (5)  Night and day among the tombs and on the mountains he was always crying out and cutting himself with stones.  (6)  And when he saw Jesus from afar, he ran and fell down before him.  (7)  And crying out with a loud voice, he said, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I adjure you by God, do not torment me.”  (8)  For he was saying to him, “Come out of the man, you unclean spirit!”  (9)  And Jesus asked him, “What is your name?” He replied, “My name is Legion, for we are many.”  (10)  And he begged him earnestly not to send them out of the country.  (11)  Now a great herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside,  (12)  and they begged him, saying, “Send us to the pigs; let us enter them.”  (13)  So he gave them permission. And the unclean spirits came out and entered the pigs; and the herd, numbering about two thousand, rushed down the steep bank into the sea and drowned in the sea.

Mark 7:24-30  And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden.  (25)  But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet.  (26)  Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.  (27)  And he said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.”  (28)  But she answered him, “Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.”  (29)  And he said to her, “For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter.”  (30)  And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone.

Mark 9:20-27  And they brought the boy to him. And when the spirit saw him, immediately it convulsed the boy, and he fell on the ground and rolled about, foaming at the mouth.  (21)  And Jesus asked his father, “How long has this been happening to him?” And he said, “From childhood.  (22)  And it has often cast him into fire and into water, to destroy him. But if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us.”  (23)  And Jesus said to him, “‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.”  (24)  Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!”  (25)  And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you, come out of him and never enter him again.”  (26)  And after crying out and convulsing him terribly, it came out, and the boy was like a corpse, so that most of them said, “He is dead.”  (27)  But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up, and he arose.

Luke 4:33-36  And in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon, and he cried out with a loud voice,  (34)  “Ha! What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God.”  (35)  But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent and come out of him!” And when the demon had thrown him down in their midst, he came out of him, having done him no harm.  (36)  And they were all amazed and said to one another, “What is this word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out!”

Luke 6:17-19  And he came down with them and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon,  (18)  who came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases. And those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured.  (19)  And all the crowd sought to touch him, for power came out from him and healed them all.

Luke 8:26-39  Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee.  (27)  When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs.  (28)  When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, “What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.”  (29)  For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.)  (30)  Jesus then asked him, “What is your name?” And he said, “Legion,” for many demons had entered him.  (31)  And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss.  (32)  Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission.  (33)  Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned.  (34)  When the herdsmen saw what had happened, they fled and told it in the city and in the country.  (35)  Then people went out to see what had happened, and they came to Jesus and found the man from whom the demons had gone, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind, and they were afraid.  (36)  And those who had seen it told them how the demon-possessed man had been healed.  (37)  Then all the people of the surrounding country of the Gerasenes asked him to depart from them, for they were seized with great fear. So he got into the boat and returned.  (38)  The man from whom the demons had gone begged that he might be with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying,  (39)  “Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you.” And he went away, proclaiming throughout the whole city how much Jesus had done for him.

Luke 9:37-42  On the next day, when they had come down from the mountain, a great crowd met him.  (38)  And behold, a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, for he is my only child.  (39)  And behold, a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly cries out. It convulses him so that he foams at the mouth, and shatters him, and will hardly leave him.  (40)  And I begged your disciples to cast it out, but they could not.”  (41)  Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you and bear with you? Bring your son here.”  (42)  While he was coming, the demon threw him to the ground and convulsed him. But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the boy, and gave him back to his father.

Luke 11:14-23  Now he was casting out a demon that was mute. When the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke, and the people marveled.  (15)  But some of them said, “He casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons,”  (16)  while others, to test him, kept seeking from him a sign from heaven.  (17)  But he, knowing their thoughts, said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and a divided household falls.  (18)  And if Satan also is divided against himself, how will his kingdom stand? For you say that I cast out demons by Beelzebul.  (19)  And if I cast out demons by Beelzebul, by whom do your sons cast them out? Therefore they will be your judges.  (20)  But if it is by the finger of God that I cast out demons, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.  (21)  When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own palace, his goods are safe;  (22)  but when one stronger than he attacks him and overcomes him, he takes away his armor in which he trusted and divides his spoil.  (23)  Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.
